Water brings outdoor spaces to life through sound, movement and ever-changing reflections. There are so many creative ways to add water features to your garden and the designs can be modern, traditional or very natural. And why settle for just one water feature? Some popular gardens open to the public use water in a variety of ways, rather than limiting it to just one element.

Start simple. Most of us don’t have the luxury of a pond. So why not start with a bird bath? A small bird bath can look beautiful and will become a centerpiece in your garden. Placing it somewhere visible through a window and watching the birds come and go will give you endless fun.

Dig deep. Not all statement water features require extensive excavation. There is a simple fountain that makes a gentle sound of water and an eye-catching sculpture. All that is needed is power to the pump and the pump can be hidden inside the function. Alternatively, you can make things really simple by choosing one of the solar fountains now available in many garden centers.

Get ready to relax. Water has tactile properties whether still or flowing. You just want to dip your hands in the water and play, or dip your fingers into the water’s surface and create ripples. So why not introduce a water feature next to or near your outdoor seating area, like here? Reflections, sounds, emotions, etc. add a lot of interest. Evaporation from a swimming pool with a fountain can cool the air on a hot summer day.

Jump in. You might like the idea of being able to swim in your garden, but you might not want the harsh blue, chemically enhanced swimming pool that usually comes with it. Why not consider a natural swimming pool? Although it is rectangular, you can create a more organic shape by landscaping with rocks.

Natural swimming pools should be planted with oxygenating plants at various depths. Reeds, water lilies and other aquatic plants will do the job. These plants consume harmful bacteria, purify water and prevent algae growth. Result? It is a pond that looks good and is good for the environment. Reduce the size of your pond. Even a small pool can make you feel adventurous. Adding stepping stones or bridges allows you to immediately cross or stay and study the depth of the pond from a close distance.

To create the illusion that the stepping stones are floating on water, treat the stepping stone supports and the inside of the pool with black mastic, as shown here. This creates a perfect reflection since you cannot see the depth inside the pool.

Play with sound. Unless you have a completely quiet swimming pool, you’ll probably hear the sound of water in your garden before you even see it. So, it’s worth thinking about what your water feature will sound like and look like. Italy’s famous Villa d’Este gardens feature a fountain that plays music. Perhaps a bit ambitious for a typical domestic plot, but more achievable sounds can range from soft resonating sounds to gurgling, gentle lapping or simple popping. There’s a reason

the English language has so many words to describe the sound of water. Whether it falls in sheets, flows over rocks, or comes out of a spout can vary depending on the height and shape of the water and the power of the pump that recirculates it. So, the next time you see your favorite water feature, think about the sound it makes, too.

Catch the rain. In nature, rainwater gets trapped in various humps and soaks and slowly seeps into the ground, slowly reaching streams and rivers. When it rains in urban areas, the water from all our hard surfaces usually flows through pipes into drains and rivers. In dense areas, this process can cause flooding. By redirecting rainwater to lower areas of the garden, called rain gardens, rainwater can slowly be absorbed into the soil and groundwater. Create a temporary water feature to add some fun to your garden after it rains.

Capture the scenery. The calm water reflects the sky and surrounding trees, plants, and buildings like a mirror, providing a tranquility that cannot be compared to other places. It’s very calming and natural to see the ripples the clouds, birds and wind create in the water.

The same effect can be achieved whether the pool is formal and small, as in this example, large and informal. The bottom or liner of the pond should be dark so the bottom of the pool is not visible. This will give you the best reflections and infinite depth.

Be rough. Garden ponds can make great homes for all kinds of wildlife, including frogs, salamanders, dragonflies and water snails. Water also attracts birds to the pond to drink and bathe, and the moist edges provide an opportunity for bees to drink. The bustle of these wild animals will spark children’s interest in exploration, which can play an important role in stimulating their interest in science and nature. But of course, safety comes first, so consider this before deciding to adopt it.

Go with the flow. Streams add a very dynamic element to the garden because they suggest a source and, in our imagination, seem to flow somewhere far away, like a lake or river. You can also introduce connecting threads through your garden. And by crossing multiple bridges or stepping stones, creating clever paths, and planting plants, your garden can seem much larger and more diverse than it actually is. Try using streams and waterfalls of different sizes. Spacious and peaceful in one area, noisy and terraced in another, each area adds a different character, but they all have something in common.
