Is expensive hardscape not in your budget? You can still have a sensational outdoor space with these imaginative ideas.

I have to be honest. If someone wanted to build me an amazing outdoor space with a fireplace and kitchen, I would never say no. I also want terraced landscaping, a wraparound porch, and a deck overlooking the tropical ocean.

What I actually have in my backyard is a concrete patio, two trees, and a chicken coop. I also have my DIY landscaping; some days are better than others. But just because you have a shabby yard without a pool doesn’t mean you can’t make a beautiful outdoor space your own. With good furniture, plants, and a little imagination, anyone can have a beautiful outdoor space.

Without a rug, it’s patio furniture. It becomes an outdoor living room. A few ‘indoor’ details such as candles and plant stands make the space feel cozier and more spacious.

This “room” was made from PVC pipe and several yards of thin fabric. Sturdy, modern outdoor furniture feels more permanent.

Use exterior walls as you would interiorly walls. Paint it, hang art, and add shelves.

I like this. Create a bright and colorful space with a collection of layered rugs, simple fabric canopies, and pillows. There’s nothing you can’t find at a flea market or garage sale.

The combination of comfortable seating and outdoor artwork makes this a charming venue. Pillows, blankets, side tables, rugs and more all add instant coziness.

In fact, you don’t have to throw a party to create a festive atmosphere. A few other bright decor items, including brightly colored linens and upholstered furniture, can make an ordinary picnic table look fun.

Placing lights above the table creates a “ceiling” and transforms a fairly plain setting into an elegant outdoor dining area.This is a carport with painted concrete floors, custom curtains, and a few paper lanterns. Impressive, right? The colors on the exterior walls and the way everything comes together are great.

Not every outdoor space has to be a dining area. This outdoor reading nook can be the best spot in or around your home. You can turn an old bed into a sofa by adding pillows.
