Designers show that there are several ways to execute this popular combination of materials.

Paths and patios made of concrete pavers and gravel are known for their many benefits, including their versatility, permeability, and overall attractive and natural appearance. But this popular combination continues to present design dilemmas, especially when it comes to keeping pavers and gravel in place. The next three terraces feature proven material combinations, each creatively addressing some of
 the pairing’s common concerns.

Mixed gravel size stays in place

Designer and contractor: RDKHarscaping, who also provided all .

Location: Buffalo NY USA
Size: 300 square feet (28 square meters)
Materials: concrete pavers and two sizes of gravel

Landscape designer and contractor transformed an underused front yard near downtown (Add Place/Country Name), into a welcoming porch and garden that provides both privacy and community connection.

Moore used different sizes of pebbles to suit the different needs of the design. He said: “Larger gravel is used to ensure better anchorage in the pavement gaps that run through the primary circulation zone. We used fine gravel in the patio area to create a softer patio lounge surface,” he says.

To the west, a red cedar hedge and gate surround the front yard, creating a private yet welcoming boundary.

New and existing plantings and a small circulating fountain enhance the privacy of this yard without being completely cut off from the rest of the neighborhood from the busy street.

It just looks like a paved road
Designer and Contractor: Buffalo NY USA
Location: (Add Place/Country Name)
Size: 324 sq ft (31 sq m) patio in 750 sq ft (70 sq m) backyard.
Materials: Cast-in-place concrete slab insert with river gravel

Designer replaced an old deck and tore up a thirsty lawn to create a new outdoor space for a (Add
Place/Country Name) homeowner. The redesign will significantly reduce maintenance and water
use and allow existing mature cherry trees to thrive.

The main patio area is a concrete slab with 1/4-inch joints the thin lines you see on most concrete
surfaces. The surface has a lightly washed sand finish lightly washed and swept with a broom to
expose the sand.

The day after pouring the concrete patio, contractor used a handheld grinder and diamond blade to
create the design you see in the foreground. He cut along the surface joint, then removed the top 3
inches of concrete along the cut, leaving the bottom 3 inches intact. The concrete is still one solid
slab, with gravel covering the areas where the concrete connects. Concrete looks like separate tiles
but never moves.

A raised bed made of 3/8-inch slats adorns the patio. Contractor used muriatic acid for several
purposes, including removing mill scale and causing rust. This gives the steel an almost Cor-Ten
appearance and requires no additional maintenance. Hire a professional to handle this acid.

There is a built-in corner bench made of sheet metal and cedar, and in the corner of the patio is a
custom fire pit made of precast concrete and rusted steel anchors.

Elegant entrance plaza with driveway and walkways
Designers: RDKHardscaping
Location: Buffalo NY USA
Size: The home measures 1/3 of an acre.
Materials: Sealed concrete pavers and loose stones.

The owners of this home in RDKHarscaping wanted a low-maintenance entryway that would entice guests to stay as they made their way to the front door.

Both the driveway and entrance use a mix of cast-in-place, stain-free concrete pavers and loose stone to form a complete landscaping feature. Sealers protect pavers from oil and surface dirt. Washed round river rocks fill the gaps between pavers.

A concrete wall poured on site forms the path from the driveway to the bright orange front door. Drought-tolerant perennials and grasses decorate the walkways and soften the mostly concrete entryway. “We wanted a front yard that required minimal water or chemicals and no mowing,” says designer.
