Extend your patio season with cozy fabrics, textures, candles, fireplaces and more.
If there’s one thing that’s hard to say goodbye to at the end of summer, it’s enjoying the outdoors on your patio. However, there is hope that certain additional facilities could extend the use of the patio until late autumn. Some require a bigger investment, such as a roof or heat lamps, while others are kinder to the pocket, such as candles. Or, if you live in a warmer climate, the following blog also includes some design tips to “warm up” your patio for the season. Introducing a patio that works even in cold weather!
Add a rooftop.
Whether you choose a permanent year-round construction or a seasonal canopy, a
roof over your patio will help retain heat during the colder months. If possible, turn on the lights
to prepare for early sunsets in the fall.

To add a roof, circle it with curtains. They can easily block the wind when the weather gets too cold, and aesthetically they can give your covered patio a tropical cabana feels.
Build a fireplace.
This is very obvious and will change the way you experience your patio.
Extend the life of your patio with an outdoor fireplace
If your fireplace is too large to invest in or you’re short on patio space, try using small portable candles to light each seating area separately. You can enjoy similar warm lighting benefits without spending a lot of money.
These days, you can even use cool tools to build a small fire pit right on top of your patio table. Be careful when getting salt!
Heat lamps
can warm up a significant space, helping keep your entire patio cozy even when temperatures drop.
If standing heat lamps seem large and daunting, consider a more discrete version, such as a ceiling-mounted heater.
It’s hard to tell just by looking at the photo, but the wooden floor is warm. Underfloor heating can work wonders on a patio, keeping your toes and space extra cozy.
If you’re one of the lucky ones who lives in a warm climate, you may not have to worry too much about cold temperatures encroaching on your patio. However, during the winter months, you may want to visually warm up your space. Adding blankets and pillows to your patio furniture will make it look cozier.
In dry climates, consider adding rugs under your furniture, especially if you have stone floors, which can be cooler. Rugs are more comfortable for bare feet and enhance the overall look.
Warm up your furniture with upholstered cushions. Designer, who designed this patio, cushioned it with thick linen lined with Sunbrella material to withstand the cold season’s rain and snow. In fact, she left her cushions outside all season long.
Tip: Designer suggests placing outdoor pillows on their side when not in use. When it rains or snows, water drains instead of accumulating inside the pillow.
Texture adds visual warmth. I love the clever use of tall grass in front of this cement wall. Add texture through tablescapes and mantle decorations. The appearance of rattan furniture also warms up the space.
This patio is filled with comfy cushions, cozy rugs, a variety of pillows and warm textures. Of course, what is the ultimate thing to add to your “fall” patio? hot tub. It’s the perfect place to relax and stargaze on cool winter evenings.
